prominance and her children were good looking). For coloring, her

First Generation
1. Melette Emelia Amansabel Harper , A full-blood Cherokee[82] 1 was born in 1827 in Mississippi and died after 1918 in near, Tyler Texas. Other names for Melette were Ancey Bell, Ansebell, Ausabel, and Belle.
General Notes:
Aunt
Dovie [nee Harper] Treadwell told me that her grandmother was a full
blood
Indian and that she hated all whites, even her grandchildren. Dovie
remarked
that one did not get too close to 'Belle' or chance bruises.
'Belle's' given name was difficult for the grandkid's to say so they
called her one of the 'sounds' from her name.
She
was living with her son Hudson Butler, near Tyler, Texas, when she
died.
Her daughter-in-law wouldn't allow chamber pots in the bedrooms so they
had
to visit the 'privy' at night. They lived in a house with a high porch
and
one night while on her way to the said privy, Bell fell off the porch,
broke
her hip and died shortly thereafter. She was wrapped in a blanket,
placed
in a wagon and driven back to her 'people' for burial. (note, Most
probably Cherokee County, Texas County)

Now,
Miss Belle wasn't a very nice person. She was mean to her slaves and
abused
her grandchildren and hated most whites... her age doesn't always
'jibe'
on the censuses... Listings in Censuses , so why should I care? She was
a person and must have had a bad youth to have turned out the way she
did.
Plus, she was my g-g-grandmother, and her g-daughter, my grandmother,
was
the sweetest person alive.

Belle and John moved to Texas in 1847, around the time that John Ross was gathering free Cherokees to move to the same area to create the Cherokee Nation in Texas.

Note from a cousin: Thank you for your wonderful help. I had no idea that Hudson Butler had another child, but it appears that he did because of the settlement of his estate. But Rachael Isaac was the only one of those children that was named in the settlement. She did receive a settlement and she signed the requested papers.
There was also another name in the settlement that I have been unable to trace anywhere but the Smith Co. TX named in the settlement. That name was C.H.Ray. I found him one time in 1880, if indeed it was him, and that was Marshall, Harrison, TX. Hudson [Butler] married the first time in SC, they had 2 children, William Hudson Butler, jr and Davidson Butler. The family history says Davidson died and mother also at birth. [since John Davidson Butler listed his birth place as SC, Hudson married the second time in SC also.]

Andrew Jackson "Jack" Harper was born Sept. 2, 1857 and Died Feb. 2, 1932. He was buried at Montague. I have a picture of both Jack and Mary Ann's tombstones.
I didn't know either one of them as I was only a couple of months old when she died. She was my dad's grandmother and from what I heard about her she was a real sweet woman. I have a picture of all her children except for Ida Lura and the two that died when they were small. One an infant of a few hours old. I think mom said it was a little boy they called him Little Early. Also a little girl named Mandy Bell who died when she was just walking. Mom has the exact dates for both of them and she is going to bring me her file she has on the Whisenhunts when I see her again. If you want them I'll get them for you.
Then she had Ida Lura (Harper) Atkins who must have been your grandmother. Is this correct? Next she had Clide Mae (Harper) Allen who was born May 24, 1895 and died Jan. 4, 1978. She is buried at Montague. Next was Clifford Love Harper who was born, my grandmothers Bible says April 26, 1897 but his tomb stone reads April 16, 1897. I guess probably his tombstone is correct. He died Nov. 24, 1973 and is buried at the Lakeview Cemetery at Marietta, Oklahoma. Next she had Mary Jewell (Harper, Gillaspy)McClendan who was born Sept 12, 1903 and she died at the age of 93 on Feb. 22, 1996. She is buried at the Oswalt Cemetery. Next was my dads' mother and my grandmother Pearl Omenda Harper, born Aug. 9, 1905 and died Aug.22, 1993. She had three children, two boys and one girl. Her oldest name was William "Buster" Estelle Burnett, and then my dad's name was Clifford Love Burnett. Her daughter was fathered by her last husband Erwin Reeves and her name is Fonnie (Reeves) Walker. Fonnie is the only one still alive. Buster died in 1995 and my father passed away Nov. 25, 1998.
The last child was Dovie Gladys (Harper) Treadwell born Nov. 16, 1907 and she is still living. She lives in Marietta, Ok and is getting quite elderly but the last I heard she was still living at home by herself. My brother and I went and had a nice visit with her about a year ago. She told us some funny stories about her mom and dad. She has three living children, two of which live in Marietta I live about 5 miles south of Marietta, Oklahoma. All of Aunt Jewell's children live in this area. I didn't know Clides family or Ida Lura's family. I've meet some of Aunt Clides family but didn't ever really know them. I know all of Aunt Jewells children and Aunt Doves children. I know a couple of Cliff's children. R. A. Harper one of Cliff's sons died just a few years ago. I went to his funeral but don't have when he died written down. My mom may have though. He was buried here at Marietta so I could find out pretty easy. I also she Virgie occasionally but I never really knew Paul. He lives around Oklahoma City somewhere. Anyways when my dad was in the hospital at Oklahoma City before he died, Paul went to visit him everyday. I met him at dad's funeral but don't remember much about him. Let me know what all information you want about these. If I don't have it I can get it rather easily.

General Notes: Leon had to quit school in the 8th grade in order to help earn money for his family, because of the depressed state of the country. However, he continued studying and learning for the rest of his life. He took any course he could find on finish work in building homes. He was a cabinet maker. He was also a contractor. He started out working in carpentry, then bought a set of "Audel's Books on Carpentry" and taught himself how to size beams, etc. and about how to take the best advantage of a site where he was building.
When I went to college to study Architecture, my first 3 years were quite easy as Daddy had already taught me so much. He was an environmental designer long before they coined a name for it.

• Birth/death: events at birth. Leon, Eunice and little Bob had just finished a homemade fried chicken dinner when the first pain hit. Leon saddled his horse and rode down the road to fetch a neighbor lady to stay with Eunice and Bob while he rode to town to find Dr. Kibbler.
A thunderstorm the night before had washed out the bridge over Salt Creek, just down the hill from the house. Leon still made it to town in record time, but it was two hours before the Doctor could come back to the ranch with him. In the meantime, the neighbor lady had sat two year old Bob on the front porch and then stood in the corner of the bedroom wringing her hands while Eunice delivered her own baby, Betty Ellen.
Actually, she was later to say that she had three labor pains and Betty Ellen shot out like greased lightening. The story of Betty Ellen's birth was recounted every year on her birthday.
